LASU don slumps, dies at LASUTH

The former Dean, Faculty of Education and the immediate past Director of Centre for Environment and Science Education (CESE), Prof. Ademola Onifade, is dead.
Onifade, who handed over few days ago as CESE director, was to proceed on sabbatical leave to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and was expected to resume on October 1.
The Professor of Sports Psychology, who was in his late 50s died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where he was rushed to after he slumped last Friday at his FESTAC residence
His sudden death had thrown the university community into mourning and many of his colleagues were shocked when the news hit the campus yesterday morning.
The late LASU don, who was seen in the campus last Friday, was full of life and shared in some discussions about the state of affairs of the university, while looking forward to resume at UNILAG for his sabbatical.
Reacting to his death, Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Dr. Adekunle Idris, said his members were shock over the demise of Onifade, saying: “Onifade was a true comrade, a great scholar and sports psychology of repute.
“We are going to miss him a lot. The union will miss his contributions and support. He was at the LASU sports complex last Thursday exercising. He was in the school just this last Friday full of life. He was supposed to go on sabbatical to UNILAG. He handed over few days ago to his successor after completing his tenure as CESE director.
“This is very unfortunate. He was one of our main pillars in union activities on campus. We gained a lot from him. When I saw him last week Thursday, he was healthy and okay. We talked about several issues including union matters.’’
At the Faculty of Education and the Department of Physical Health and Education, academic and non-academic staffers were in a state of shock with many wondering what happened.
When contacted, the university’s Press and Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kayode Sutton, said he was not available to comment on his death also the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Obafunwa, was not available when Daily Sun visited his office.
The late don was the only representative of Nigeria at UNESCO Committee on Sports and Physical Education, former ASUU Secretary at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), member of Nigeria University Games (NUGA), former chairman, LASU Sports Council, consultant to the National Sports Commission (NSC) and at various times the Head of Department of Physical and Education in Faculty of Education of LASU.
