Anambra students mourn undergraduate killed by cultists


Students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, formerly Anambra State University (ANSU) Uli campus, recently staged a procession in memory of their fallen colleague, Uzoigwe Stanley Onyekachi, allegedly killed by cultists in a bar close to the campus.
Uzoigwe, from Orlu, Imo State, was shot dead by suspected cultists, who attacked him in a bar close to the campus. He was in 500 level, Mechanical Engineering and served as an adviser to the former Students’ Union President before his tragic death.
Tears flowed like river, as other students held a memorial procession, denouncing the tragic incident that led to his death. The students clad in black attire wept as they marched from the university’s main gate to various offices. Chanting angry songs, they condemned violence and cultism that would give a bad image to their school.
Investigation by our reporter revealed that a suspected cult member shot Uzoigwe after a misunderstanding between the deceased and another student from the Department of Chemical Engineering.
One of the mourners, Orazulume C.J, who is in 500 level Mechanical Engineering, described the death of Uzoigwe as shocking and devastating.
He said: “I wept and felt so bad when I heard Stanley died. It was shocking. He was too good to die but we can’t question God. We just have to give glory to God for everything. This is a guy I knew so well; he was friendly and always lively. Everybody loved him in the department because he was nice starting from our year one to this final stage,” he said.
Also speaking, the former SUG President of the institution, Comrade Akubueze Chukwuebuka, described the deceased as a humble and respectful student of the institution.
“His exit is a monumental loss. He was one of our best, hardworking and respectful strudents. Stanley’s death is a sad news for us. We are not happy with the death of this friendly colleague. Students are grieved because he was a good colleague,” he said.
Akubueze further advised the students to desist from any act of cultism. Rather, he fellow students to seek God’s protection.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs Chinwe Nnedum, said the suspected killer of Uzoigwe was arrested and handed over to the police, where he is presently assisting them with the investigation.
She said the incident happened outside the school premises but commiserated with the family of the deceased and other students.
Nnedum further advised the students to choose their friends wisely and shun groups that promise them false security and power.
