Kobe Bryant On The Verge Of Retirement at age 37
He announced his retirement in form of a poem on The Players' Tribune website, bringing to a close one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport. In the poem titled 'Dear Basketball' The 37 year old wrote;
You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.
In a statement Sunday night, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Bryant “one of the greatest players in the history of our game.”
“I join Kobe’s millions of fans around the world in congratulating him on an outstanding NBA career and thank him for so many thrilling memories.”
Bryant was 17 years old when he was picked 13th overall in the 1996 draft by the Charlotte Hornets, who promptly traded him to the Lakers, the only organization for which he has played in his professional career. Pope Francis, who arrived conflict-ridden Central African Republic
on Sunday, November 29, on his final leg of a three-nation African tour,
has urged the warring factions to lay down their weapons.
The
country has been ravaged by sectarian violence for more than two years
after longtime Christian leader Francois Bozize was ousted by rebels
from the mainly Muslim Seleka force. Pope Francis opened a 'holy door'
during a mass at Bangui Cathedral, marking the beginning of a Jubilee
year dedicated to forgiveness and reconciliation which will be formally
inaugurated on December 8.
In his address, he called for "unity, urging the people to avoid the
temptation of fear of others, of the unfamiliar, of what is not part of
our ethnic group, our political views or our religious denomination"
He also said he hoped the upcoming elections would allow the country to peacefully begin a new chapter.
"It is my fervent wish that the various national consultations to be
held in coming weeks will enable the country to embark serenely on a new
chapter of its history" he said.

Amaechi orders probe of maritime academy over N18bn remittances
The academy's rector had recently approached Amaechi to accuse NIMASA of starving the institute of Funds. Amaechi immediately called for a meeting with the management of NIMASA and enquired from them why it was sitting on the subvention of MAN, Oron.
This claim was however refuted by NIMASA's acting DG, Haruna Jauro who told Amaechi that the agency had remitted over N18 billion to the academy since 2009. At the enquiry of the minister, the MAN rector, Okpo said he only took over in 2011 to which NIMASA declared that a sum of N13 billion was remitted to the institution since the rector took over. When asked what he had done with the N13 billion remitted to the academy since he took over as Rector, Okpo kept giving incoherent and inconsistent answers. This made Amaechi to immediately call for a probe.

Nigerian who sold guns, bullets to criminals in the UK jailed for 16 years
A notorious
'godfather' who sold machines guns to criminals in Birmingham while at
the heart of a gang which gunned down two innocent girls in a botched
attack has been jailed for 16 years. Nigerian Nosakhere
Stephenson, 41, (pictured left) masterminded an operation to sell antique firearms and

The
gang - which for years fought a bloody and protracted feud with the
rival Johnson Crew - trafficked weapons including a MAC 10 machine gun, a
brutal weapon which was used in one of Birmingham's most notorious
murders.
Letisha
Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis were innocent victims caught in the
crossfire of the two warring gangs, whose turf war blighted the Aston
area of Birmingham for over a decade and cost dozens of lives.
Their
murders, which took place in 2003, propelled Birmingham’s gun crime
problem into the national headlines and kick-started campaigns by
residents who had grown tired of the daily acts of violence.
Eighteen
men have now been convicted for a series of offences relating to the
criminal firearms operation which Stephenson ran.
As
he was jailed for 16 years, Detective Constable Phil Rodgers said the
police operation - and subsequent haul of dozens of weapons and
ammunition - had undoubtedly prevented more murders in the city.
The
court heard how the gang had thousands of rounds of ammunition
specially made to be used with guns and revolvers, which they sold for
about £3,000 each.

“I just kind of wanted my Dad to give me away on my wedding day,” Kalia Kirby told WBTV.On Wednesday morning, Kaila Kirby and her fiancé Daniel Pardue stood beside Jubal Kirby’s hospital bed at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., and said their vows.
With only a few hours to prepare, hospital staff pulled together $45 in donations and bought fresh flowers and cake to celebrate the wedding, the Observer reported.
About 50 friends and relatives surrounded the couple as they tied the knot, according to the newspaper.
And while a wedding in a hospital room may seem rare, it wasn’t the first vow said in Jubal Kirby's hospital room this week.
Jubal Kirby married his daughter’s mother in a short ceremony last week, WBTV reported.
Jubal Kirby and Colleen were together for 26 years but did not decide to get married until it became clear how ill he was.
“He said he wanted to make an honest woman out of her,” Kaila’s older sister, Jessica Harrison, told the Observer.

43-year-old actor and father of two recounted the time he
nearly died while filming Beasts Of No Nation on location in Africa.
Appearing on the Jonathan Ross Show, he spoke of how he slipped six feet
down a waterfall.
He explained: 'We decided to do this waterfall scene where all these child soldiers were walking behind this massive waterfall. In Hollywood you would have just filmed a bit of water coming down and just shot people’s closeups but Cary Fukunaga, the director, decided to shoot it for real.'
The Luther star admitted he was quite relaxed at the top of
the waterfall, falsely believing he was safe as he waited for the crew
to set up for the scene.
He said: 'The stunt co-ordinator says, "Listen everyone
this is a waterfall, that’s a 90, 100 foot drop down there and the
ground is very slippery, just be careful!"
'I put my foot on this rock just to hang out and chill out
while they were setting up and as I’m doing that it’s slippery,
obviously. I slip [and think] I’ll be alright, I put my hand on this
tree... it’s not a tree it’s a branch!
'It snaps and I go literally about six feet before I go bang over and I got caught by the security guy!'
After Jonathan declared he could have fallen to his death, Idris joked: 'Yes! Today’s news, Idris Elba dies by a waterfall.'He also revealed the director caught malaria during the shoot but thankfully, he survived.
